Both CO2 and tri-gas (hypoxia) incubators are designed to generate and maintain a defined environment. They do a great job of imitating physiological conditions so that cells can grow in their ideal environment. The problem lies in the frequency the door of these chambers are opened and cells are removed from this ideal environment every time a measurement is to be made or an image is to be taken (usually under an external microscope). What this means is most scientists never actually measure cells under physiological conditions and the cells they are looking at are generally in some state of shock. To fix this problem the CytoSMART Lux2 has been developed and is able to fit in nearly every incubator.
Live-cell imaging itself has become a desired and often necessary analytical tool in many cell biology laboratories that operate in the field of neurobiology, developmental biology, pharmacology. Currently live-cell imaging is often difficult, because it required large costly high-end devices that are difficult to operate. The CytoSMART Lux2 is a highly compact, easy to use, and affordable inverted microscope for bright-field live cell imaging so it can be used in every biological laboratory. While it has functionality for basic imaging, it also has the capability to be used in routine cell culture processes like tracking confluency over time.

Remove environmental factors from the equation
Tight control of the environment (e.g. temperature, humidity, CO2 and O2) is a highly important factor in determining the success or failure of any live-cell imaging experiment. Every time an incubator door opens the environment within can change considerably which leads to drastic changes in cellular micro-environments. Further, using a conventional microscope, even with a stage-top incubator, can also present a plethora of challenges for researchers to maintain cells in a physiologically relevant state while being imaged.
The CytoSMART Lux2 operates at low-voltage and is designed for safe use in any CO2 or hypoxia incubator. Incubators should no longer need to be continuously opened to inspect cells when checking confluence or to update the results of a scratch assay. Further, the Lux2 has even been specifically designed to be used within the HypoxyLab without any modifications needing to be performed. This means controlling environmental factors and imaging do not need to be done separately which removes all environmental variability out of your study.
Effortless image analysis and data storage
The CytoSMART Lux2 can be set to record images at specific intervals for minutes, hours and days. In fact, it is one of the few systems that can run for weeks on end. All recorded images are able to be sent to the CytoSMART Connect Cloud where image analysis software determines the proliferation by analyzing the occupied area (% confluence) of cell images over time. Further, all image analysis data is graphically represented in the online dashboard allowing for a quick representation of what is happening with cells over time. For researcher ease, alerts can be set for confluency, meaning researchers receive an automatic notification once the cell culture has reached a certain confluency and is ready for splitting or experiments, such as transfection.

The CytoSMART Lux2 is an excellent resource for any cell-based biology lab to help with understanding cellular dynamics. Students can be provided online access to view cells at anytime within an incubator and look at the growth patterns. The small size of the microscope allows for easy storage and the accommodating price allows for the purchase of a few units within one lab or across labs. Finally, the system lends its self to be able to be used real time at the front of a lab and be projected for all students to watch and learn.
Easy access to cells at any time
Thanks to the cloud data storage and image analysis you can access your recording and view a cell culture in almost real-time from anywhere on a pc, mobile or tablet with internet access. All the recorded data such as images (.jpg files), time-lapse video (.avi files) or temperature data and confluency data (.csv files) can be downloaded for further processing and analyzing.
