The VelO2x system has been engineered to provide an isolated and highly controlled oxygen environment to small animal models (ie mouse and/or rat). By directly mimicking the oxygen conditions experienced across a wide variety of disease or treatment models, the VelO2x grants researchers a better understanding of how O2 levels affect various conditions such as sleep apnea, systemic hypertension, pulmonary dysfunction, and ischemia to name a few.

The VelO2x system itself has two components – a gas mixer and animal chamber. The ICONIC Gas Mixer, which offers pinpoint control of O2, is connected to the isolated chamber where animals are held. The isolated chamber comes in 2 sizes: a 31L and 66L size which hold 1 and 2 cages respectively.

Full control of oxygen levels

Researchers have the ability to control O2 levels from 0.1% to 23.0% (can be increased). Unlike other systems, the VelO2x comes standard with the ability of static and dynamic control of O2. This provides users of the system the ability to run both chronic and intermittent hypoxia-based studies and as research goals change the velO2x changes with them.

In the 31L chamber, oxygen can be ramped down from 20.9% to 6% in 15 seconds and ramped up from 6% to 20.9% in 35 seconds. Similarly, the 66L chamber can do 20.9% to 6% in 30 seconds and from 6% to 20.9% in 45 seconds.

Ramping up and down can also be done slowly over the course of up to 5 minutes. The user, therefore, has full control to choose the ramping that best fits their study purpose.

Ease of use

A fully integrated touch screen makes adjusting all parameters needed for a particular experiment easy. Settings can be adjusted in real time.

Two universal cable glands sit atop the animal chamber and each gland allows up to six cables to be inserted. This permits the researcher to use external systems within the chamber to analyze various parameters of their live animals.

All data of O2 and CO2 levels are saved continuously to a USB and can be transferred to any computer for analysis or for validation and verification of animal welfare.

The design of the system lends itself to be easy to clean with standard laboratory cleaning agents (70% ethanol or 70% isopropanol) between uses.

Animal welfare

Animal welfare and safety was considered in the design of the VelO2x system. The system logs all exposure of O2 and CO2 levels if needing to submit to a regulatory committee. Further, sound levels have been checked and comply with animal welfare standards (< 80 dB).

While the VelO2x system has been optimized for rapid transitions in O2 often seen in acute hypoxia studies, its functionality allows it to be used for chronic studies as well. The following are a few of the most common studies in which the VelO2x may be used, but is by no means an extensive list. Hyperoxia is also an available functionality with the system.

  • Apnea/Apnoea– Acute hypoxia and/or hypercapnia
  • Sleep Apnea– Chronic periodic intermittent hypoxia and/or hypercapnia
  • Apnea of Prematurity – Chronic sporadic hypoxia and/or hypercapnia
  • Ocular Angiogenesis– Abnormal blood vessel formation in the eye is a major cause of blindness
  • SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)– Progressive acute hypercapnia and hypoxia
  • Atherosclerosis– Chronic moderate intermittent hypoxia
  • Ischemia (Cardiac Infarction, Stroke, etc.) – Acute hypoxia usually in conjunction with surgical clamping of major artery

TelemetryReal time assessment of various physiological parameters while within the chamber. These capabilities include ventricular and arterial pressures, sympathetic nerve activity, biopotentials (ECG, EMG and EEG) and tissue oxygen.

Tissue oxygen and/or flow – The OxyFlo and OxyLite systems may be used to assess how different tissues respond to changing O2 levels.

What is the VelO2x?

The VelO2x is a bench-top hypoxia incubator made specifically for small animal models (ie mouse and/or rat) that can precisely maintain needed oxygen conditions down to 0.1% oxygen. While the VelO2x systems rapid O2 ramping makes it ideal for chronic intermittent hypoxia studies, it is still an excellent option for all other hypoxia-based animal research.

How does VelO2x differ from other hypoxia workstations?

The VelO2x is an affordable animal hypoxia chamber that effectively controls and maintains O2 levels. Its ability to cycle various oxygen conditions is unparalleled in both user control, functionally and response. The ergonomic chamber is compact enough that it can be placed on any ordinary lab bench and needs no extra customization to work effectively. How quickly can the VelO2x ramp up and down O2 levels?

These vary based on gasses being used, but assuming 35% O2 in N2, the 31L chamber can be ramped down from 20.9% to 6% in 15 seconds and ramped up from 6% to 20.9% in 35 seconds. Similarly, the 66L chamber can ramp down from 20.9% to 6% in 30 seconds and ramp up from 6% to 20.9% in 45 seconds.

Are gloves necessary to operate the VelO2x?

Wearing gloves represents good laboratory practice with all lab bench work, but there is no requirement for the user to wear them.

How can I clean the VelO2x?

The floor and walls of the VelO2x should be disinfected and cleaned using 70% ethanol or isopropanol between each use. It is recommended that a deep clean is done every 3-6 months. The deep clean is explained in the user manual and is more extensive in nature.

What gases are required to operate VelO2x?

Two gasses are needed for operation. First, laboratory grade quality 100% nitrogen is needed to lower O2 levels. Second, compressed air or O2 in N2 or 100% O2 can be used. Choosing this depends entirely on the application.

Can I access the trace data displayed on the touch-screen?

Yes, this data is automatically and continuously stored to internal memory for 2 hours but will be continuously saved to an external USB media if attached. The internal memory can support approximately 2 hours of continuous recordings, at which point old data files will be overwritten. Velox
